Coffe Table Revisited

Remember this coffee table I redid a while back?  It seemed like it was missing something.  Since I just made glaze for the armoire I figure I would slap some of the extra on the coffee table. 

 

 I just took the glaze and wiped it on with a foam brush and then gently wiped it off with a damp paper towel.  Sometimes you might have to add a little more glaze to the deep areas where you want it to show up.

I was able to complete this little update during  one nap time.  I left it out in the garage until the next day to make sure it was all the way dry.

  

 

Next up for this room will be some homemade curtains and thick wall stripes!!!  Stay tuned for that!

Vintage Armoire

I promise I'm still alive and kicking over here I've just been taking some time to really enjoy this little cutie...

Look at those rolls!  Ok, enough enough onto furniture...

I bought this vintage armoire over a year ago for $35 and it has been sitting in my garage since then.  It sat in there for so long mainly because I couldn't decide if I should stain or paint it.  

I finally decided to stain it until the hubs and I started the sanding process.  The woodwork on the doors was so intricate that sanding was doing more harm than good.  So now I would be the owner of a painted armoire instead of a stained one.  

First we did some rough sanding on the entire piece and then used spray paint primer.  Then after letting all of that dry I painted the entire thing with 2 coats of an antique white paint.  After letting the paint dry I glazed all the raised up woodwork to help make it stand out more.

To make the glaze I just used some brown paint and added a little bit of water.  I go over how to glaze in this post. 

 

 I also bought some new knobs at Hobby Lobby (for 50% off of course).

I'm using this armoire to house all my crafting supplies and our family games!

 To make the armoire look complete I painted the inside a gray blue color that we had left over from our bedroom. 

 This project isn't quite complete yet because I am going to have the hubs install some shelves on the right side to maximize the space.  This is where all the family games with go!

I don't have a good picture of this but I lined the drawers with leftover fabric from the bookshelf makeover I did over a year ago.

Nightstands

I've been on the search for nightstands for our master bedroom for the longest time.  I FINALLY found them...in the booth!  Mrs. DeVore's mom had them in there was selling them!  SCORE!  The only part was that they were black and our bedroom is mainly blue-gray and chocolate brown.  No problem-o!

I didn't even prime them because she had just painted them.  We had some leftover OOPS paint from our master bathroom so I just used that to paint the entire nightstand.  It just wasn't doing it for me though.  I took some dark brown stain I already had in the garage and used it like a glaze on the drawers.  It took days...yes days... to dry, but it worked none the less.   

Here's the finished product!

I spray painted the handles silver but they looked too new and silver for me.  I then took just little bit of stain and brushed it over the silver spray paint to give it more of an aged look.

End Table

My co-worker had an end table that she no longer had use for and so graciously donated it to me.  I forgot to take a before picture but it was the same table, just silver.  I repainted it with some turquoise oops paint I had and that still was not doing it for me.  So, I took some mahogany stain and started to brush it on the legs with a paint brush and then wiped it off with a paper towel.  I learned that it was actually easier to just use the paper towel (while it had some stain on it) instead of the brush on the whole table because then I was able to skip a step!

Glazing

I found this frame at a yard sale over the weekend.  The original price tag said $99.99...I don't think so!  When I brought it home I wasn't quite sure what I was going to do with it but while sitting at work it hit me.  I had some "oops" paint that is the perfect turquoise that I would paint the frame and then I would glaze it with black to make the designs pop.

Here it is before:

I primed it and let it dry for about 30 minutes.  It was super hot and sunny outside so I figured that was long enough.  Then I hand painted it with the turquoise paint.  It would have been WAY easier to use spray paint but I have yet to find the perfect turquoise in a spray paint.  After that dried for about an hour I went to town with the glaze.

Some people buy "special" glaze but not me.  Who's got time to keep running to the store, or the money?!?!  I just use semi-gloss or high gloss paint mixed with a little bit of water.  That's it.  Nothing special about it.  Actually now that I think about it...the homemade kind is more special than the store bought kind.  Boo-yah.  

I had to work super quick because it was drying so fast.  I did a small section at a time.  You just paint it on pretty heavy and wipe it off with a damp rag.  Also, get ready for some ugly looking hands and finger nails.  The paint from the rag gets all over you.  I look a little gothic right now.

The finished project is so totally worth it though:

 

The piano bench was a yard sale find from this past Saturday.  It actually has storage for books!  I am so excited about it because before we had the bench seat sitting there and bleh, that did not look good there at all.  I am going to recover the faux leather that is on there now.  Stay tuned... (no pun intended)

Mozart was a yard sale find from about a month ago.  

 To the booth it goes...even though I really like it up there...

Clock turned Bulletin Board

I found this old clock at Goodwill on one of my latest thrifting trips.

I removed the clock and took everything apart so I just had the frame.  I primed and spray painted the frame white.  I would like to say that I am a genius and thought of this immediately, but I didn't.  I decided to glaze the frame with some black glaze (glaze: semi gloss paint with some water mixed in) because the white wasn't covering the dark wood like I wanted it to. 

I bought some fabric at my local fabric store and stapled it on the board inside of the frame.

Ta-da!  Now it's a bulletin board!

 

To the booth at The Depot it goes!  Well, actually, it is already in the booth in this picture.

The Headboard...finally.

Remember this?  I finally finished it!!!

I found it at my local Goodwill for $20

Ok, so here's the kicker...it looks like wood right?  WRONG.  The swirly dirlys are PLASTIC!  How cool is that?  AKA....no sanding involved!  WOOHOO!

I primed it and then spray painted it.

I almost wanted to leave it like this.  I thought it looked like lace.

The next step was taking semi-gloss paint and mixing it with some water and then quickly (very quickly) painted it on and then wiped it off with a wet rag.  Note to self: next time wear gloves.

Total cost was probably around $35.

This is going up in our guest bedroom.  I would show you a picture of it on the bed but I don't have bedding yet.  I'm thinking of something with turquoise and yellow.  Maybe some orange and deep purple?  Who really knows?!
